It's free to apply for an Australian business number (ABN) with the Australian Business Register (ABR). You can apply online or lodge a form by mail.
To get an ABN you must be carrying on an enterprise in the form of a business. Your application will be refused if you are not entitled.
Once you are registered your details will be added to the ABR and it's your responsibility to keep them up-to-date.
Your application will be processed faster if we can identify you with the information you provide.
Read What you need for your ABN application to ensure you have the required information before starting the application.
If your application is successful or if you get a reference number you can continue and apply for other business registrations.
If the effective start date of your ABN is in the future, your ABN (and/or Business Name) will not display on ABN LookupExternal Link until the ABN start date has been reached.
You can save and return to your application as many times as required before the expiry date.
