    Manage ABN Connections FAQs

Do I have to link the ATO as a member service in order to be able to connect ABNs to my myGov account?

No. To connect an ABN to your myGov account you will need a myGov profile. A myGov profile is created when you link at least one of the profile member services (for example, Medicare, Centrelink or ATO).

If I connect my ABN to my myGov account, will this change how I receive mail for my business?

Connecting an ABN to your myGov account will not change the way you receive mail.

However, if you create a myGov account and link it to the ATO, you will then receive most personal ATO mail (and business ATO mail if you’re a sole trader) through your myGov Inbox.

If you link to the ATO and have a tax or BAS agent, the agent will still be able to access any correspondence the ATO sends you. However, the agent will not be notified that any correspondence has been sent. The ATO recommends that you discuss this with your agent before setting up Manage ABN Connections.

Alternatively, if you create a myGov account and link it to Centrelink or Medicare, this will not change the delivery of your ATO mail.

Can I connect an ABN to my myGov account and still receive my business mail via Australia Post, or have it sent directly to my Tax Agent?

However, if you're a sole trader and you create a myGov account and link to the ATO, you will then receive most personal and business ATO mail through your myGov Inbox. If you create a myGov account and link it to Centrelink or Medicare, this will not change the delivery of your ATO mail.

If you run a partnership, company or trust, no business mail will be sent to your myGov Inbox.

I am a sole trader. Can I use Manage ABN Connections?

Yes you can, provided you have an existing myGov account. If you want to access government online business services like the Business Portal, Manage ABN Connections enables you to use your myGov credential to access it. It provides a secure alternative to AUSkey.

Manage ABN Connections gives you the flexibility to conduct business from any device, anytime, anywhere, because it is compatible with all browsers and devices.

Alternatively, you can use your myGov credential to log in and manage your business affairs within ATO online servicesExternal Link. However, this is limited to preparing and lodging activity statements and managing the PAYGI role.

Note: If you create a myGov account and link to the ATO, you will then receive most personal and business ATO mail through your myGov Inbox. If you create a myGov account and link it to Centrelink or Medicare, this will not change the delivery of your ATO mail.

I work in small business. Can I use Manage ABN Connections?

Yes you can. Manage ABN Connections gives small business the ability to choose between myGov credentials or AUSkey to access government online services. Manage ABN Connections:

    • is compatible with all browsers and mobile devices, so you can conduct business anytime, anywhere
    • provides a single login option, meaning one user name and password to access both individual and business services, which is easier to remember and manage
    • provides the ability to connect multiple ABNs.

Note: If you create a myGov account and link to the ATO, you will then receive most personal ATO mail (and business ATO mail if you’re a sole trader) through your myGov Inbox. If you link to the ATO and have a tax or BAS agent, the agent will still be able to access any correspondence the ATO sends you. However, the agent will not be notified that any correspondence has been sent. The ATO recommends that you discuss this with your agent before setting up Manage ABN Connections.

I am concerned about security of my account, will this change the security level?

Manage ABN Connections doesn't lower existing security measures.

Will Manage ABN Connections provide any additional services?

Manage ABN Connections does not provide additional services to business. It enables an alternative login choice for existing government online business services.

Will Manage ABN Connections change the level of access?

Manage ABN Connections does not change the levels of access for authorised individuals.

Access Manager allows Administrator AUSkey holders to control access to their secure tax information. You should continue to use Access Manager to manage all associate and staff member accesses and permissions to your business information, including removing access entirely.

I am a Tax Practitioner or BAS Agent, can I use this credential choice?

Consultation with Tax professionals has determined Manage ABN Connections will be deployed to Tax professionals in late 2016. Additional controls will be available (for example, the ability to authorise whether staff can use this service).

What happens when the customer selects the 'Always use myGov’ option?

Selecting this option affects all ABNs connected. The customer doesn't get to choose whether they want only one ABN to always access via myGov credentials. All ABNs are linked or none. This setting can only be switched off via the Manage ABN Connections screen.

De-selecting the 'Always use myGov' and making sure it takes effect.

The customer will need to make sure their browser settings are set to automatically delete cookies and internet files on exit.

In the customer's internet browser settings they will need to make sure both ‘Temporary Internet Files’ and ‘Cookies’ are checked, but ‘Favourites’ is unchecked.
