Making the most of ABR data

The Australian Business Register (ABR) holds information for every business, classified as public and non-public data.

While everyone can access public data, only eligible government agencies can access and use non-public data for free.

We recently spoke to partner agencies to see how they were using the data in their agency:

Byron Shire Council says ABR data has enabled them to offer a quick and targeted response to flood impacted businesses, providing emergency information and grant support.

Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) used ABR data during the COVID-19 pandemic when the Government introduced six loan schemes for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). APRA used non-public data to obtain ANZSIC industry codes, borrower structure, location by state and the geographic coordinates of businesses to enhance loan data.

The Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions uses ABR data to identify suspected fraudulent grant applications.

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) says ABR data assists them in delivering key regulatory responsibilities, and when carrying out investigative and intelligence functions.
